Monkey See, Monkey Do

A friend of mine needed my opinion on hate crimes & events that have happened in our neighborhood. I liked the topic a lot & got really into it; here ‘tis!:

To say that hate crimes are an “issue” is simply an understatement. It is something that our community, along with neighboring communities, have to deal with everyday. Minorities are treated as if they are something other than a human, a living creature, an inanimate object that doesn’t deserve to be a part of our town, Patchogue. Growing up, I was not taught black or white, light or dark, ugly or pretty, same or different; I was guided by the basic notion that people are good or bad, and to determine to like or dislike someone based on that, but never hate. “But never hate, hate is a strong word,” were the words that constantly poured out of my father’s mouth and reinforced by my mother. Unfortunately, with a culturally diverse community, one’s community has culturally diverse morals, values, and distinctions between that right and wrong. That’s when hate crimes burden the public and become an ongoing issue.

The man who was stabbed by the teenagers of the Patchogue-Medford community will forever be in my mind as the man who is a victim of not only a hate crime, but of a culturally diverse sector of society. Children should be taught to place judgments on movies, books, inanimate objects; not on living creatures due to lack of commonality.

Our neighborhood is special because of it’s diversity and opportunities for all those present, but what is special may also have faults; arbitrary thinking towards those present is a downfall. No one should want to represent their town in a demeaning light and have it be known as the town where individuals are hurt, killed, and punished for being different. Prevention measures should not be taught and preached to the children of a community, but to the adults of the community. Monkey see, monkey do. Children and young adults are the monkeys of society; when they see, they do. Let them see the good, the giving, the conducive behavior rather than the hating. “Monkey see, monkey do.”

Shopping venture with a visitor-friend inSOHO. Wall to wall, floor to ceiling…costume jewelry! I now know what heaven feels like!

It is now Spring, so that means everyone will soon be wearing a lot of brights… white, beige, tangerine, sea foam.. the list goes on & on. Add an extra pop of color with your brights; kill it with the triple “F” threat.

P.S. Costume jewelry is always a fantastic investment because if you buy the right pieces they can look real, complete an outfit, & if it breaks or gets tarnished you mustn’t feel terribly about throwing it away or giving it to your kid sister. Why? (Psttt.. costume jewelry is inexpensive!)

On my walk home today I ran into a consignment boutique called “Eleven”. Of course, I sparked some chit-chat with the girl behind the counter. Background information: green is my least favorite color.

A compliment was shot at my green wardrobe. Second, she told me how she had worn a green outfit a few days prior & totally owned it (go girl)! My new friend reassured me that green was a “must-wear” for Spring 2012.

Despite much opposition, green is in this season. ~~It’s like mama always said, “Eat your greens!”~~

It’s like Risa always said, “Wear your greens!”

“Anything Goes” when you’re “Going out”

When my friends come out to visit me in Manhattan, they’re looking for a once in a lifetime experience (club, lounge, hookah bar, wine, restaurants). Yes, you can find clubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants in almost every town in the USA, but saying you’ve gone “clubbing in the city”, ate at Max Brenner or some cute cafe’ in the West Village always seems to sound more chic.

Along with the countless activities to choose from every time I have visitors, I always get bombarded with questions regarding proper “city dress”, as if the dress code changes when you cross the bridge, or go under the tunnel.

“Wear whatever you want. Jeans, a dress, skirt…really, whatever you want.” That’s never the answer anyone wants to hear.

This doesn’t just go for New York. If you’re going to a pristine restaurant, a night out on the town with the girls, or a club venture with a group of friends to celebrate a special occasion… I promise you, anything goes! (OK, not everything). No sweats, no running sneakers; these are just basic style rules & morals everyone -should- abide by. But, when you’re going out don’t be afraid to “dress down” with your favorite jeans, or “dress up” with a party dress. Everything in your closet can be dressed up, or dressed down.

A Warm Welcome!

Dear onlookers and all others,

I’m new at this “blog” thing, so please, bare with me here! My name is Risa Hartsough and I am a Freshmen in college. I hope to one day be a fashion director for a magazine… cliche’, I’m aware. Growing up I was told by people around me, friends, family, teachers, randoms, that I absolutely had to have a career in fashion. One day when I was absent from school I received numerous texts and Facebook comments saying “Congrats!”. Little did I know, I was voted best dressed in my high school. This is not an opportunity for me to be braggadocios( it was high school, who cares, right?), but rather express to my readers that fashion is my talent; I can’t dance, I can’t take good photographs, I draw stick figures… (catch my drift?).

Just as parents want to share their children’s photos and accomplishments with the world, I want to share style with the world. My shoes, accessories, dresses, and scarves are my babies… and I want the world to see what they can do! I want YOU to see what your babies can do when paired with the right dress, handbag or hair style.

If you’re a fashionista, please feel free to share what you have to say and I’ll definitely feed off that!
